How to Put on Academic Robes for a Graduation Ceremony

Jul 25, 2009 12:41 AM
Graduate in cap and gown with a serious expression.

Most likely if you are reading this, you are about to graduate from college. The registrar has just asked you how tall you are and given you a bag with your gown. Here I will explain what is each piece and how it should be put on.

Put on the gown, the loose outer garment, which is typically black. It should have some type of fastener, usually a zipper. The gown should be worn closed and should have bell-shaped sleeves if you are graduating from an associates or bachelor degree. If you are graduating from a masters program your gown should have long sleeves closed at the end, with the arm passing through a slit above the elbow, it may be worn open or closed depending on your school.

Put on the stole or hood. The stole will have your faculty colors outside and sometimes have your school colors inside. It should be donned with the hood part to the back and the tapering part to the front of your gown, about mid chest.

Don your cap or mortarboard. It will have a tapered side and a side with elastic. The tapered side should be worn towards the front of your face. The tassel will be attached to the cap, it should be worn on the right side before the degree is conferred and afterwards shifted to the left the moment the degree awarded.

Tips

  • For comfort and practicality it is recommended that you wear a top or shirt that buttons up to the neck, as this makes it easier to attach the hood over your gown.
  • Alternatively, you may find a supply of safety pins useful.
  • Ladies may also find it useful to bring some hair grips to assist in holding their caps in place.
